We want our website to be accessible to as many people as possible, we have taken several steps to do this.
Why we want to be accessible
Not only because by law we are obligated to but because we want everyone who visits our website to have a positive experience, and that includes our users with physical or sensory impairments, this page outlines all of the tools available to our website users that may need to make adjustments when viewing our site.
Accessibility tools
Every effort is made to ensure that our website is accessible across all platforms and modern browsers. We would strongly recommend, however, that you upgrade your browser to the latest version for optimum experience.
The site’s text size can be adjusted according to your preferences via options in your browser's 'View' or 'Page' menu. This can also be done via your keyboard:
PC users: Select 'Ctrl' and '+' or '–'
Mac Users: Select 'Cmd' and '+' or '–'
The following online resources are available to help you change your browser settings:
Advice for Linux users
Some of the resources on the website are available to view or download in Portable Document Format (PDF). You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read PDF files, which can be downloaded for free from the Adobe website.
Technical details
We have provided the features set out below to improve navigation for screen reader users, keyboard navigation and users of text-only browsers.
Structured, semantic markup, headings and navigation menus
HTML heading tags are used to convey the document layout. H1 tags are used for main titles, H2 tags for subtitles, and so on. Navigation menus are marked up as HTML lists. This ensures that the number of links in the list is read out at the start and it can be skipped easily.
Where an image conveys important information, alternative text will be provided. If the image is used for a decorative purpose the alternative text will be left blank.
Style sheets, fonts, colours
This site uses software called Sassy Cascading Style Sheets (SCSS) to control all of the presentation and layout. If your browser or browsing device does not support style sheets, the use of structured semantic markup ensures that the content of each page is still readable and clearly structured.
Font sizes and colours can be changed by using your own custom style sheets or browser settings. The BBC has an excellent guide on how to do this for various browsers and systems.
Scripting
The content on this site has been written and formatted to make it accessible and the majority of content areas of the site are accessible if scripting is unavailable.
Standards compliance
Our aim is for the pages on this site conform at a minimum to Level A compliance as specified by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Most of the pages are valid HTML and use structured semantic markup. The SCSS also validates.
Contact Information
If you have any questions, comments, suggestions or complaints relating to the accessibility of this website, please email enquiries@roalddahlcharity.org with the subject heading 'Accessibility' and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
